Greenland Advanced Oral Care

Cosmetic Dentistry in Grand Rapids

Cosmetic dentistry changes how your teeth look — their color, shape, length, spacing, and how they frame your face when you smile. Done well, nobody can tell you have had work done. That result depends on planning and on the laboratory work behind it, which is why cosmetic cases here are designed by a prosthodontist and fabricated in our own lab.

How Cosmetic Dentistry works at Greenland Advanced Oral Care

How it works

What to expect with cosmetic dentistry

  1. Step 1

    Understanding the goal

We start with what you actually dislike about your smile, photograph it, and evaluate tooth proportion, gum line, midline, and how much tooth shows when you talk and smile.

  2. Step 2

    Design and preview

Digital design lets you see the proposed result before treatment begins. For larger cases we can build a physical mock-up so you can try the new shape before anything is permanent.

  3. Step 3

    Conservative execution

We use the least invasive option that achieves your goal — whitening or bonding before veneers, veneers before crowns — and fabricate everything in our on-site laboratory.

The basics

About cosmetic dentistry

A natural-looking smile is not a row of identical white rectangles. Real teeth vary subtly in shade from the gum line to the edge, they are translucent at the tips, they have surface texture that catches light, and the two front teeth are slightly longer than the ones beside them. Restorations that ignore those details read as artificial even when the work is technically clean.

There is also a functional side that cosmetic work cannot ignore. Changing the length or shape of front teeth changes how your teeth guide against each other when your jaw moves. Get that wrong and the new restorations chip within a year. A prosthodontist's training is precisely in restoring appearance and function together, which is why complex cosmetic cases belong in that skill set.

What cosmetic dentistry includes

Teeth whitening — professional whitening for stained or yellowed teeth. Usually the first thing to try, since it is the least invasive and least expensive change.

Composite bonding — tooth-colored resin sculpted directly onto a tooth to repair a chip, close a small gap, or reshape an edge. Done in one visit with no lab work.

Porcelain veneers — thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of teeth to change color, shape, and alignment together. Conservative relative to crowns, and the workhorse of smile design.

Crowns — when a tooth needs structural support as well as cosmetic improvement.

Invisalign — clear aligners for alignment and spacing, often the better answer than veneers when the teeth themselves are healthy.

Smile enhancements — combining several of the above into a coordinated plan.

Conservative first

There is a version of cosmetic dentistry that grinds down healthy teeth for veneers when the patient really just wanted whiter teeth. We try hard not to practice that version.

Our order of preference is: whiten, then bond, then veneer, then crown. Each step is more invasive and less reversible than the one before it. If whitening and a small bonded repair get you the result you want, that is what we will recommend — even though it is the least expensive option on the list.

Function is not optional

Front teeth do real work. They guide the jaw as it moves side to side and forward, and that guidance protects the back teeth. If new restorations change that geometry incorrectly, the result is chipped porcelain, sore muscles, or damage further back in the mouth.

This is why we evaluate the bite before designing any cosmetic case, and why we screen for grinding first. A patient who clenches heavily may need a night guard as part of the plan to protect the investment.

For larger cases

When the teeth are worn short from years of grinding, or when several teeth are missing and the bite has changed, cosmetic improvement and structural rebuilding become the same project. Those cases are planned as restorative dentistry or full-mouth reconstruction, where appearance and function are designed together from the start.

Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

Where should I start if I do not like my smile?+

With a consultation and photographs. Often what a patient describes as "my teeth are crooked" is really shade, or a worn edge, or gum line asymmetry. Identifying the actual issue usually opens up simpler and cheaper options.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?+

A veneer covers the front surface of a tooth and requires minimal reduction. A crown covers the tooth entirely and is used when the tooth also needs structural support. Veneers are more conservative; crowns are stronger when the tooth is compromised.

Will cosmetic work look obviously fake?+

It should not. Natural results come from getting translucency, surface texture, and proportion right — details our technicians can judge because they see your natural teeth in person rather than working from a shade code.

How long does cosmetic dentistry last?+

Bonding typically lasts several years and can chip or stain. Porcelain veneers and crowns commonly last ten to fifteen years or longer. Grinding is the biggest factor in shortening any of them, which is why we check for it first.

Is cosmetic dentistry painful?+

Whitening and bonding usually need no anesthesia. Veneer and crown preparation is done with local anesthesia and is comfortable. Some temperature sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal.

Does insurance cover cosmetic dentistry?+

Purely cosmetic treatment is generally not covered. Work that also restores function — a crown on a cracked tooth, for example — is often partially covered. We will tell you which category your treatment falls into before you commit.

Should I whiten before or after other cosmetic work?+

Before. Porcelain and composite do not change color with whitening, so we whiten first, let the shade stabilize, then match new restorations to your brightened teeth.

Can you fix just one front tooth?+

Yes, and matching a single tooth to its neighbors is one of the hardest things in dentistry. It is exactly the case where having the laboratory on site makes the difference between a good match and an obvious one.

“I’m in the process of whole mouth restoration. I have had my share of not great dental experiences. I could not be more pleased with this process. Dr. Greenland and his assistant Stacey have been wonderful to work with. He has an in-house lab where the crowns/teeth are made.”
