About mouth guards
Nighttime grinding and clenching — bruxism — generates forces well beyond normal chewing, sustained for hours while you are asleep and have no protective reflexes. Over years, that flattens the biting surfaces, creates hairline cracks in enamel, and breaks down crowns and fillings. Many people have no idea they do it until a dentist points out the wear pattern.
A night guard does not stop you from grinding. What it does is put a replaceable layer between your upper and lower teeth so the appliance absorbs the wear instead of your enamel, and it slightly changes the jaw position in a way that often reduces muscle tension and morning headaches. A custom guard fits the individual contours of your teeth, which is why it stays in place and does not have to be clenched to keep it there — the usual failure of boil-and-bite versions from a drugstore.

Night guards for grinding and clenching
If you grind your teeth, the damage accumulates quietly. Enamel flattens, edges chip, and hairline cracks develop that eventually split a cusp. Existing crowns and fillings fail earlier than they should.
A custom night guard is the standard protective measure. It is worth understanding what it does and does not do: it protects your teeth and often relieves muscle tension, but it does not cure the habit. When grinding is severe and the bite has already collapsed, protection alone is not enough and restorative treatment or full-mouth reconstruction may be needed to rebuild lost tooth height.
Sports mouth guards
A properly fitted sports guard reduces the risk of broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, and soft tissue injuries. Custom guards outperform stock and boil-and-bite versions on both protection and comfort — and comfort determines whether an athlete actually keeps it in.
We make guards for football, hockey, basketball, wrestling, martial arts, and any other sport where contact is likely. For children and teens with changing dentition, we account for erupting teeth in the design.
Occlusal splints
Some patients need more than a protective guard. When jaw joint pain, muscle spasm, or an unstable bite is involved, a diagnostic occlusal splint is designed to position the jaw specifically rather than simply cover the teeth. Dr. Greenland’s prosthodontic training covers exactly this kind of bite analysis, and our laboratory fabricates the appliances on site.
Why fit is everything
A guard that does not fit will not be worn, and a guard that is not worn protects nothing. That is the whole argument for having them made here: the technician builds it, the dentist fits it, and any adjustment happens in the same building rather than being mailed back and forth.

How do I know if I grind my teeth?+
Common signs are waking with a sore jaw or headache, teeth that look flattened or chipped at the edges, increased sensitivity, and a partner who hears grinding at night. We also see it directly as wear facets during an exam.
Is a custom night guard better than a drugstore one?+
Considerably. Boil-and-bite guards are bulky, fit loosely, and many people unconsciously clench to hold them in — which can make the problem worse. A custom guard fits precisely, is thinner where it can be, and is far more likely to be worn nightly.
How long does a night guard last?+
Typically several years, depending on how heavily you grind. Heavy bruxers wear through them faster. Bring it to your checkups and we will assess whether it still protects properly.
Will a night guard stop me from grinding?+
No — it protects your teeth from the consequences. Grinding is often linked to stress, sleep quality, and airway issues. If we suspect sleep apnea is involved, we will suggest an evaluation, because that is a medical issue worth addressing.
How do I clean it?+
Rinse it and brush it gently with a soft brush and cool water each morning, then let it dry fully before storing it in a ventilated case. Avoid hot water, which can distort the fit.
Do children need mouth guards for sports?+
Yes, for any contact or collision sport. Dental injuries in youth sports are common and expensive, and a knocked-out permanent tooth in a child leads to decades of restorative work.
Does insurance cover a night guard?+
Many plans cover a portion when it is prescribed for bruxism. We are fee-for-service and will file the claim for you as a courtesy so any reimbursement goes directly to you.
