Greenland Advanced Oral Care

Restorative Dentistry in Grand Rapids

Restorative dentistry repairs what damage, decay, and wear have taken away. It ranges from a single filling to rebuilding an entire bite. What ties it together is a functional goal: teeth that meet correctly, distribute force evenly, and let you chew comfortably — with appearance following from doing that properly.

How Restorative Dentistry works at Greenland Advanced Oral Care

How it works

What to expect with restorative dentistry

  1. Step 1

Find the cause, not just the damage

We evaluate decay risk, crack patterns, wear facets, and how your teeth actually meet. A tooth that broke from grinding needs a different plan than one that broke from decay.

  2. Step 2

The most conservative option that works

We recommend the least invasive treatment that will hold — a filling over a crown where a filling is sound, saving a tooth over extracting it wherever it is realistic.

  3. Step 3

    Rebuild and protect

Restorations are fabricated in our on-site laboratory and fitted to the bite precisely, then protected — often with a night guard — so the underlying cause does not break them too.

The basics

About restorative dentistry

Teeth work as a system. Each one is positioned and shaped so that when your jaws close, force distributes across the arch and the joints sit where they should. Damage anywhere in that system changes the loading everywhere else. Lose a molar and the neighboring teeth tilt while the opposing tooth drifts down into the space. Wear the front teeth flat and the jaw has to travel further to make contact.

This is why restorative treatment is not simply patching holes. Before rebuilding a tooth we need to know why it broke — decay, a crack, grinding, or a bite that was already overloading it. Restoring the tooth without addressing the cause produces a restoration that fails the same way the original tooth did.

The restorative ladder

Treatment escalates with the amount of tooth structure lost:

Fillings — for cavities and small chips, where most of the tooth is intact.

Inlays and onlays — lab-made restorations for damage larger than a filling but not requiring full coverage.

Crowns — full coverage for cracked teeth, teeth after root canal treatment, and teeth worn down by grinding.

Bridges — replacing a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side.

Dental implants — replacing the root as well as the crown, preserving jawbone.

Dentures — removable replacement when many or all teeth are gone.

Full-mouth reconstruction — rebuilding the entire bite as one coordinated design.

Why the cause matters more than the repair

A cracked molar can be crowned in two visits. But if the crack came from clenching, and nothing else changes, the tooth next to it cracks next year.

So we look for the pattern. Multiple cavities in an adult often point to dry mouth from medication, frequent sipping of sweet drinks, or a hygiene gap in a specific area. Wear facets across the front teeth point to grinding that needs a night guard. Recurrent decay under old fillings suggests margins that need replacing rather than repeated patching.

Treating the pattern is what makes restorative work durable.

Sequencing a larger case

When there is a lot to do, order matters:

  1. Urgent — infection, pain, and teeth at immediate risk
  2. Foundationalgum disease treatment and decay control, because restorations placed on unhealthy foundations fail
  3. Structural — crowns and replacement of missing teeth to stabilize the bite
  4. Refinementcosmetic work and finishing details
  5. Protection and maintenance — night guard, cleaning interval, home care

We give you this plan in writing with costs attached, so you can decide what to do now and what can wait.

The specialist advantage

Dr. Greenland’s three-year prosthodontic residency at Mayo Clinic was devoted to exactly this work, and our in-house laboratory fabricates the restorations. For complex cases — several teeth involved, a changed bite, or previous work that failed — that combination is the reason patients get referred here.

Book an assessment and we will give you a straight evaluation of where things stand.

Restorative Dentistry FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

What does restorative dentistry include?+

Fillings, inlays and onlays, crowns, bridges, dentures, and implant-supported restorations — anything that repairs or replaces damaged or missing tooth structure to return normal function.

Is restorative dentistry the same as cosmetic dentistry?+

They overlap but are not the same. Restorative work rebuilds function and structure; cosmetic work changes appearance. A crown on a cracked molar is restorative. Well-planned restorative work also looks good, but that is the byproduct rather than the goal.

How do I know if a tooth can be saved?+

It depends on how much healthy structure remains above the bone, whether the root is sound, and whether the supporting bone is healthy. We will tell you honestly when a tooth is not worth restoring, because a failing restoration is worse than a planned replacement.

Will restorative work last?+

Well-made restorations last many years. Longevity depends heavily on hygiene, on whether the cause was addressed, and on protecting the work from grinding. We will tell you what lifespan to expect from each option.

Is treatment painful?+

Procedures are performed with local anesthesia and should be comfortable. Sedation is available for longer appointments. Some sensitivity for a few days after treatment is normal.

What if I need a lot of work?+

Large cases get planned as a whole and then phased. We sequence by urgency — pain and infection first, then structural risk, then appearance — and spread treatment over a timeline that works financially.

Do you accept insurance for restorative work?+

Restorative treatment is often at least partially covered. We are a fee-for-service practice and file claims as a courtesy so reimbursement goes directly to you. Financing with up to 24 months interest-free is available.

Can you fix work another dentist did?+

Yes, and it is a routine part of our practice. Failed crowns, loose implants, and ill-fitting dentures are common reasons patients are referred to a prosthodontist.
