Greenland Advanced Oral Care
Invisalign in Grand Rapids
Invisalign straightens teeth with a series of clear, removable aligners instead of brackets and wires. Dr. Eryn Huber is a certified Invisalign provider, and for adults who want straighter teeth without looking like they are in braces for a year, it is usually the first option worth discussing.
How it works
What to expect with invisalign
- Step 1
Assessment and digital plan
We scan your teeth and evaluate whether aligners can achieve what you want. The digital plan shows the projected movement sequence and final position before you commit.
- Step 2
Custom aligner series
Your aligners are manufactured to the plan. Each set is worn about one to two weeks, and small tooth-colored attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help specific movements.
- Step 3
Monitoring and retention
We check progress at intervals and refine if teeth are tracking behind. When treatment finishes, retainers hold the result — teeth drift back without them.

The basics
About invisalign
Teeth move when steady, gentle pressure is applied to them over time — the bone around the root remodels, letting the tooth shift into a new position. Braces apply that pressure through brackets and an archwire. Aligners apply it through a sequence of custom trays, each shaped slightly closer to the target position than the last.
The trade-off is compliance. Aligners only work while you are wearing them, which needs to be 20 to 22 hours a day. Patients who take them out for long stretches simply do not get the planned result, and the case falls behind. Braces have no such requirement because they are fixed. That is the honest comparison, and it matters more than any other difference between the two.

Who Invisalign works well for
Aligners are a good fit for:
- Crowded teeth that overlap and are hard to clean properly
- Gaps and spacing between teeth
- Relapse after braces years ago when a retainer stopped being worn
- Mild to moderate bite issues — overbite, underbite, crossbite
- Adults who want straighter teeth without visible appliances
Aligners are a weaker choice for severe skeletal discrepancies, teeth needing significant rotation or vertical movement, and patients who know they will not wear them consistently. In those cases we will say so and point you toward orthodontics.
Straightening as a health treatment
Crooked and crowded teeth are not only a cosmetic issue. Overlapping teeth trap plaque in places floss cannot reach cleanly, which raises the risk of cavities and gum disease in those specific spots. An uneven bite concentrates chewing force on a few teeth, wearing them faster and sometimes cracking them.
Correcting alignment addresses those problems at the source rather than repeatedly repairing their consequences.
Aligners versus veneers
Patients sometimes ask about veneers to make crooked teeth look straight. It is worth understanding the difference: aligners move your own healthy teeth into better position, and remove no tooth structure. Veneers cover the front of teeth, which requires permanently reducing enamel.
When teeth are healthy and simply misaligned, aligners are the more conservative treatment. Veneers make more sense when teeth also have shape, color, or structural issues that alignment alone would not fix — a decision we work through during a cosmetic dentistry consultation.
Finishing well
Two things determine whether you are happy in five years: wearing the aligners as directed, and wearing retainers afterward. Neither is complicated, and both are entirely within your control.
Many patients follow alignment with whitening and minor bonding as part of a smile enhancement plan, since newly straightened teeth are the right time to address color.

What it helps
Conditions we treat with invisalign
How long does Invisalign treatment take?+
Most cases run roughly six to eighteen months. Minor crowding or relapse after old braces can finish faster; more significant movement takes longer. We give you an estimated range from the digital plan.
How many hours a day do I have to wear the aligners?+
Twenty to twenty-two hours — essentially everything except eating, drinking anything but water, and brushing. This is the single biggest factor in whether treatment finishes on schedule.
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?+
For many common cases, yes. Braces still handle certain complex movements and severe bite discrepancies more predictably. We will tell you honestly if your case is one where braces or an orthodontic referral is the better choice.
Does it hurt?+
You will feel pressure and tenderness for a day or two after switching to each new aligner. That is the teeth moving, and it fades. Most patients find it milder than the soreness after a braces adjustment.
Can I eat with the aligners in?+
No. Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back in. Eating with them in damages the aligners, and sugary drinks trapped underneath cause decay quickly.
Will I need a retainer afterward?+
Yes, and this is not optional. Teeth have a strong tendency to drift back toward their original positions. Retainers, worn as directed, are what preserve the result you paid for.
Does Invisalign help with grinding?+
Sometimes indirectly. If uneven contacts are contributing to clenching, correcting the alignment can help. But aligners are not a night guard, and patients who grind heavily usually still need a separate protective appliance.
Is Invisalign covered by insurance?+
Plans with orthodontic benefits often cover a portion, sometimes with a lifetime maximum. Dr. Huber is in-network with Delta Dental of Michigan. We will check your benefits and go over financing before you start.
