The basics
Understanding chipped teeth
Enamel is the hardest tissue in the body, but it is brittle and it does not repair itself. Most chips are the final step in a longer process — a tooth weakened by a large filling, by years of [grinding](/symptoms/teeth-grinding/), or by acid erosion — that finally gives way on an ordinary bite. The popcorn kernel gets the blame, but it rarely acts alone.
What matters clinically is depth. A chip confined to enamel is a cosmetic issue with no urgency. A fracture into dentin exposes microscopic tubules that connect to the nerve, causing sensitivity. A crack that reaches the pulp, or one that travels vertically down the root, changes the outlook considerably — a vertical root fracture usually cannot be saved. This is why a "small chip" that hurts when you release a bite deserves prompt evaluation.

Matching the repair to the damage
Minor enamel chip. Smoothing the edge, or bonded composite to rebuild the contour. One visit, often no anesthesia needed.
Moderate chip into dentin. Bonded composite restores shape and seals the exposed dentin, which resolves the sensitivity.
Fractured cusp. When a piece of the biting surface breaks off, a filling has nothing solid to hold onto. A crown wraps the tooth and holds it together.
Cracked tooth reaching the pulp. Root canal treatment first, then a crown, because a treated tooth is brittle.
Vertical root fracture. The one outcome we cannot restore. The tooth is extracted and replaced with an implant or bridge.
Front tooth chips. Cosmetically demanding — matching a single front tooth to its neighbor is one of the hardest things in dentistry, and where our on-site laboratory makes the biggest difference.
Cracked tooth syndrome
Some cracked teeth show nothing on an X-ray and look normal. The giveaway is the symptom pattern: sharp pain when biting on something specific, often worse on release, sometimes with temperature sensitivity, and it comes and goes.
The crack opens slightly under load, the fluid inside shifts, and the nerve responds. Left alone, chewing forces drive the crack deeper until it reaches the pulp or splits the tooth. Caught earlier, a crown that holds the tooth together often preserves it for years.
Why it usually is not the popcorn
Healthy enamel does not typically fracture on ordinary food. When a tooth chips, the interesting question is what weakened it first:
- Years of grinding creating microscopic fatigue cracks
- A large old filling leaving thin, unsupported walls
- Undermining decay from a cavity
- Acid erosion from reflux, or from frequent acidic drinks
- A bite where a few teeth take a disproportionate share of the force

Is a chipped tooth a dental emergency?+
A small cosmetic chip is not urgent, though we will smooth a sharp edge quickly. Call right away if there is significant pain, bleeding, a large piece missing, or the tooth is loose or knocked out — those are time-sensitive.
Can a chipped tooth be fixed invisibly?+
Usually yes. Bonded composite is shade-matched to your enamel and sculpted to the original shape. For larger repairs on front teeth, a veneer or crown made in our on-site lab gives a better long-term match.
How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth?+
It depends on the repair. Bonding a small chip is one of the least expensive procedures we do. A crown costs considerably more because it is custom-fabricated. We give you the number before starting.
My tooth hurts when I bite but looks fine — what is happening?+
That pattern, especially pain on releasing the bite, suggests a cracked tooth. The crack flexes open under load and closes when you let go, irritating the nerve. It needs evaluation before the crack propagates.
Will a chipped tooth get worse?+
Often, yes. A chip creates a weak point and a rough surface that collects plaque, and chewing forces work on the flaw continuously. Cracks in particular tend to propagate rather than stay stable.
I knocked a tooth out completely. What do I do?+
Handle it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly with milk or saline — do not scrub. Try to reinsert it in the socket, or keep it in milk, and get to a dentist immediately. Time is the main factor in whether it can be saved.
How do I stop chipping my teeth?+
Avoid chewing ice and hard candy, wear a mouth guard for sports, and get a night guard if you grind. If chips keep happening, the underlying cause is usually grinding or a bite problem, and that is what needs treating.
