Teeth Cleaning in Grand Rapids
A professional cleaning removes what brushing and flossing cannot — hardened tartar below the gum line, where the bacteria that cause gum disease live. It is the single most cost-effective appointment in dentistry, and for most people it is the difference between keeping their teeth and slowly losing them.
How it works
What to expect with teeth cleaning
- Step 1
Assessment first
We measure the pocket depth around each tooth and check for bleeding and bone level on X-rays. That tells us whether you need a routine cleaning or periodontal therapy, rather than guessing.
- Step 2
Thorough removal
Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, followed by polishing to smooth the tooth surfaces so deposits re-form more slowly.
- Step 3
A plan matched to your risk
Some patients do well at six months; others need three- or four-month intervals to stay stable. We set your recall based on measurements, and we show you what to change at home.
Why patients choose it
Benefits of teeth cleaning
Removes hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot reach
Stops early gum inflammation before it becomes bone loss

Includes oral cancer screening at every visit
Leaves teeth visibly brighter by removing surface stain
The basics
About teeth cleaning
Plaque is a soft bacterial film that forms on teeth continuously. Brushing removes it while it is soft, but within about 24 to 72 hours the minerals in your saliva harden any plaque left behind into calculus — tartar. Once hardened, it cannot be brushed off, and its rough surface collects more bacteria.
Tartar below the gum line is the problem. The bacteria in it trigger an immune response that inflames the gum tissue and, if it continues, dissolves the bone anchoring the tooth. That process is largely painless, which is why people are surprised to learn they have advanced gum disease. Removing tartar on a regular schedule interrupts the cycle before bone is lost — and bone, unlike gum inflammation, does not grow back.

Routine cleaning versus periodontal therapy
The difference is not effort — it is what the tissue needs.
A routine prophylaxis is for patients whose gums are healthy or mildly inflamed. Pocket depths are shallow, there is no bone loss, and the goal is maintenance.
Scaling and root planing — a deep cleaning — is a treatment for active gum disease. When pockets have deepened, tartar sits on root surfaces well below the gum line where a routine cleaning cannot reach. This is done quadrant by quadrant with local anesthesia, and it is followed by periodontal maintenance visits at shorter intervals.
We will not sell you a deep cleaning you do not need, and we will not do a routine cleaning on gums that require therapy, because that leaves the disease untreated.
What happens at your visit
- Review and measurement — health history, X-rays if due, and pocket depth charting around each tooth
- Scaling — ultrasonic and hand instruments remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line
- Polishing — smooths the enamel so deposits re-form more slowly
- Screening — the dentist examines your teeth, existing restorations, and soft tissues, including an oral cancer screening
- Home care — specific technique adjustments for the areas you are actually missing
What cleanings prevent
Consistent cleanings are the main defense against cavities, gum disease, and chronic bad breath. They also catch problems at the stage where treatment is a small filling rather than a crown, a root canal, or an extraction that leads to missing teeth.

What it helps
Conditions we treat with teeth cleaning
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?+
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease, deeper pockets, or a history of rapid tartar buildup, a three- or four-month interval keeps you stable. We base the recommendation on measurements, not a default.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?+
A routine cleaning treats healthy gums, working at and just below the gum line. A deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — treats active gum disease by cleaning the root surfaces inside deeper pockets, usually with local anesthesia and often over two visits.
Does a cleaning hurt?+
A routine cleaning should not. If your gums are inflamed they may be tender and bleed, which improves once the inflammation resolves. Deep cleanings are done with local anesthesia so the appointment itself is comfortable.
Why do my gums bleed when I floss?+
Bleeding is a sign of inflammation, not a reason to stop flossing. It usually means plaque is sitting along the gum line. In most cases consistent daily flossing plus a professional cleaning resolves it within a couple of weeks.
Will a cleaning whiten my teeth?+
It removes surface stain from coffee, tea, and tobacco, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter. It does not change the underlying color of the tooth — that requires professional whitening.
Is it too late if I have not been in for years?+
Almost never. We will assess where things stand, tell you honestly what is reversible and what is not, and start with whatever matters most. Coming in after a long gap is common and we do not make it awkward.
Can a cleaning fix bad breath?+
Often, yes. Persistent bad breath frequently traces to bacteria in periodontal pockets or on the tongue. Removing those deposits addresses the source rather than masking it.
